Important Notice - Vehicle safety recall

AFSA is aware of concerns around the inclusion of vehicle safety recall data on the PPSR since our update in early March.

We are working with our supplier to address the issues with this National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS) data.

From 11:59pm AEDT on 29 March 2023 search results, search certificates and verification statements will no longer include vehicle safety recall data.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

Searches that have returned a ‘contact manufacturer’ result can be clarified with the relevant manufacturer.

The manufacturer will always be the most up-to-date source of information regarding vehicle safety recall information.

    Search by serial number

This search option allows users to identify registrations that exist against a specific item of serial-numbered personal property. Use of the PPSR is subject to the PPS Register Conditions of Use, Third Party Data Conditions (for example NEVDIS data conditions) and the appropriate fees.

Four categories of collateral class may be searched by serial number:

    • motor vehicles
    • watercraft
    • aircraft and
    • certain intangible property (patent, design, trade mark, and plant breeder's right).

Please see the relevant collateral class in the Glossary for the correct serial number identifier type.

Specify the type of serial-numbered property to be used for the search. The types of serial-numbered property are:

    • motor vehicle
    • watercraft
    • aircraft
    • intellectual property.

For further information, please see the Glossary for the relevant collateral class or for the serial number.

Required Enter a motor vehicle serial number:Required

The motor vehicle serial number is available on the vehicle's registration papers. It is also on the vehicle's compliance plate, usually located under the bonnet.

Make sure you enter the serial number correctly, with each character in the correct order. If you enter the wrong number, PPSR will still conduct the search and charge you for the cost of the search.

For further information, please see Glossary - serial number or motor vehicle.

    • If the motor vehicle has a VIN, enter the VIN. A VIN is the 17 character identifier recorded on most vehicles built after 1988.
    • If the motor vehicle does not have a VIN with 17 characters, you should enter the Chassis number. If you are searching a pre-1989 vehicle, the vehicle identifier is a Chassis number.
    • If the motor vehicle does not have either a VIN or a Chassis number it may have a Manufacturer's number, enter the Manufacturer's number.

Warning: If you do not enter the VIN, Chassis or Manufacturer's number correctly, you may risk not finding registrations for the motor vehicle. If you enter the incorrect VIN, Chassis or Manufacturer's number the PPSR will still conduct the search and charge you for the cost of the search. This field is not case sensitive. There is no ability to search by engine number.

Required Enter a watercraft serial number:Required

For further information, please see Glossary - watercraft, HIN, official number and serial number.

An official number is a 6 digit serial number issued by the Australian Shipping Registration Office to Australian registered ships.

When searching on an official number enter the number following the 'ON' prefix (do not enter 'ON') and include any leading zeros to make the full 6 digit serial number.

Please check the serial number before proceeding with your request.

A HIN is a unique 14 character alphanumeric identifier for a watercraft, usually allocated by a registration authority of a state or territory.

The PPSR ignores your use of upper/lower case and any dashes and spaces.

Please check the serial number before proceeding with your request.
