Important Notice - NEVDIS

The National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS) has a planned outage on Sunday 11 May 2025 from 5:00 am to 11:00 am (Canberra time).

NEVDIS data is intended to assist PPSR users with checking the VIN or Chassis Number they entered is accurate. Users can also view any data held on NEVDIS about a vehicle’s stolen or written-off status. A reminder that NEVDIS data is not always available or up-to-date when you do a search of a motor vehicle on the PPSR.

During this outage:

  • PPSR searches using a VIN or Chassis will not include NEVDIS information.
  • PPSR registrations using a VIN or Chassis will not include NEVDIS information.

Please note: The absence of NEVDIS data from a PPSR search certificate or verification certificate does not affect the data on the PPSR in relation to security interests. The PPSR does not provide refunds when NEVDIS data is not available or up-to-date. To obtain the NEVDIS data, a search of the PPSR by serial number at another time may provide that information.

    • certain intangible property (patent, design, trade mark, and plant breeder's right).

    Motor vehicle

Required Enter a motor vehicle serial number:Required

The motor vehicle serial number is available on the vehicle's registration papers. It is also on the vehicle's compliance plate, usually located under the bonnet.

Make sure you enter the serial number correctly, with each character in the correct order. If you enter the wrong number, PPSR will still conduct the search and charge you for the cost of the search.

For further information, please see Glossary - serial number or motor vehicle.

    You must specify serial number
A valid VIN is always 17 characters in length.
A value for chassis number is required
A value for manufacturer's number is required
    • If the motor vehicle has a VIN, enter the VIN. A VIN is the 17 character identifier recorded on most vehicles built after 1988.
    • If the motor vehicle does not have a VIN with 17 characters, you should enter the Chassis number. If you are searching a pre-1989 vehicle, the vehicle identifier is a Chassis number.
    • If the motor vehicle does not have either a VIN or a Chassis number it may have a Manufacturer's number, enter the Manufacturer's number.

Warning: If you do not enter the VIN, Chassis or Manufacturer's number correctly, you may risk not finding registrations for the motor vehicle. If you enter the incorrect VIN, Chassis or Manufacturer's number the PPSR will still conduct the search and charge you for the cost of the search. This field is not case sensitive. There is no ability to search by engine number.
